Paphiopedilum

Why change from bark to fern fibre substrate?

One of our product trial growers, Allan Watson, says he is often asked a number of key questions since he began using Fernwood Tree Fern Fibre some 4 years ago.

One of those questions is why he changed from Bark to Fern fibre substrate. He says the results speak for themselves. The Paphiopedilum is a classic example. Planted in Fern Fibre for the 2023 – 2024 growing season, the plant overall looked healthier. It produced a flower that presented itself stronger looking and a third bigger in size.

Other genera currently starting to spike appear to be producing similar outcomes. Allan says he is looking forward to some more awardable plants in the spring of 2024.

Another question: What about the difference in product cost? Allan says this is a no-brainer. He has found that since trialling Fern Fibre, his repotting timeline has extended out beyond 4 years and counting. Watering and fertilizer use has been reduced to nearly half and the overall collection of multi genera is producing increase growth and lower support costs.

Allan also says that with the variety of Fernwood Tree Fern Fiber product challenges you as a grower to try growing some of your plants on fibre slabs or totems.
